Santorini is one of those places that people dream of visiting. You’ve seen countless photos and heard countless stories, but there’s always the risk that dream place you’ve fantasized about won’t actually meet your high expectations. So if you’ve ever wondered if Santorini is really as impressive and jaw dropping as the photos and stories make it out to be, well I’m here to tell you that this slice of paradise really does live up to the hype. Santorini is quite literally heaven on earth, and I have the proof.
Tips for Visiting Oia, Santorini
Do:
- Expect to take photos of literally everything you see because it’s that darn beautiful, this town seriously has no bad angles. You’ll want to make sure you clear out any unnecessary photos on your phone and bring a large SD card with a fully charged battery.
- Hike the trail between Fira and Oia for some epic views.
- Cool off with some cliff jumping down at Amoudi Bay.
- If you can afford to stay in Oia, DO IT! Hotels are incredibly expensive, so try visiting during spring or autumn to avoid the summer holiday prices.
- If you plan to watch the sunset from a restaurant, choose one that’s elevated above the footpaths where the crowds will be standing. It was very disappointing having to leave the restaurant because there were people standing in front blocking the view with their selfie sticks.
Don’t:
- Don’t be one of those tourists who don’t know how to pronounce the name of the town they’re in. Oia is pronounced “EE-ah” not “OY-ah”.
- You’ll probably blow most of your budget on accommodation, so best to steer clear of any shopping. Prices are almost double if not triple what you’d pay in Athens and the rest of the world.
- Don’t expect white sandy beaches, this is a volcanic island after all.
- Ferries don’t always run on time. You could be stuck waiting an hour or two at the port, so bare this in mind if you’re on your way to Athens for a flight. Don’t leave things to the last minute when you’re running on Greek time.
