Osmeña Peak is the highest point on the island of Cebu and is the perfect place to end your day for a sunset hike. I’d never actually heard of this peak until we booked our day tour with Cebu Trip Tours, which included a visit to Kawasan Falls, snorkelling in Moalboal and then a hike to Osmeña Peak. If you’ve seen photos of the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, an island off the coast of Cebu, you might think the view from Osmeña Peak looks a little similar. While the hill formations do look alike, the views from Osmeña Peak are far more epic.
When is the Best Time to Visit?
Both sunrise and sunset are popular times and we happened to visit on a Saturday so there were quite a few locals enjoying a weekend adventure. I’d personally recommend sunset because although you get 360-degree views from the peak, the best view is looking towards the ocean where the sun will be setting.
How Long Does it Take to Hike?
Entrance to the peak costs 30 pesos, which you pay at the registration office at the start of the trail. The ticket also includes a guide and although it’s not necessary as the path is well marked, the guides are helpful for photo opportunities if you want group photos and just to make sure you arrive safely.
The hike only takes about 20 minutes to the top along a rocky path. I noticed a few unprepared people in sandals who likely just came from the beach, so I’d recommend packing a pair of sneakers for your day trip because you’ll be much more comfortable. You’ll also find a few locals selling refreshments and snacks at little market stalls along the hiking trial.
On the afternoon we visited it was incredibly windy so you had to be careful not to be blown over when standing at the summit. The wind also made it a lot colder so I’d recommend bringing something warm if you plan on hanging around and waiting till sunset like we did.
Camping at Osmeña Peak
There’s also a flat area at the summit to camp for the night. It’s an amazing location to set up a tent but it can be incredibly windy and cold overnight so you’d need to pack accordingly.
How to Get to Osmeña Peak?
We booked a private day tour of in a mini van that included round trip transfers from Cebu City, which is about 3 hours drive away. It’s popular to rent motorbikes, but I would only recommend this I you’re a seasoned driver as it’s quite a long drive up the mountain to the start of the hiking trail.
