The most beautiful and of course most popular sunset viewpoint in Coron Town is Mt. Tapyas. From the peak you’ll get sweeping views of the rolling hills and islands that dot the coastline. There’s also a giant white cross and ‘Coron’ sign spelled out in big white letters that sits at the top of the mountain, much like the Hollywood sign.
How Hard Is It To Climb Mt. Tapyas?
The hike really isn’t that difficult and people of any fitness could do it if you pace yourself. It’s a concrete staircase with 721 steps and there’s even people selling cold water along the hike if you need another bottle. I’d recommend starting the hike at least an hour before sunset so you’re not rushing up. We did the hike without stopping because the sun was going down fast. I would have preferred a more chilled pace and being able to stop along the way to look at the view. It’s also nice reaching the summit earlier so you can see the view change from daylight to sunset.
There’s also more hills and hiking trails at the summit, which is why I recommend allowing enough time to explore before it starts to get dark. Coron can seem like a rather sleepy town until you make it up here for sunset. Given it’s the best viewpoint in town it’s no surprise that everyone makes the hike up here for at least one sunset of their trip. The hill is very spacious though and there’s lots of room for everyone to sit and take in the views. There’s also no entrance fee to do the hike.
I recommend staying until it gets dark so you can see the cross and Coron sign light up. Keep in mind we did have to use the torch on our phone when hiking down the stairs because there aren’t enough streetlights along the trail.
How To Get There
The start of the staircase up Mt. Tapyas is in the center of town, so depending on where you’re staying you can either walk or take a tricycle. There’s also a small car park if you’re arriving on your own motorbike.
